The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) has applied for arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas's leader in Gaza Yahya Sinwar for war crimes.
Karim Khan KC said there were reasonable grounds to believe that both men bore criminal responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity from at least 7 October 2023.
Israeli defence minister Yoav Gallant and Hamas's political leader Ismail Haniyeh, along with the group's military chief Mohammed Deif are also wanted for arrest.
The ICC, based in The Hague, has been investigating Israel's actions in the occupied territories for the past three years - and more recently the actions of Hamas as well.
Mr Netanyahu recently called the prospect of senior Israel figures joining the ICC's wanted list "an outrage of historic proportions".

Arrest warrants were also issued against Yahya Sinouar, leader of Hamas, Mohammed Diab Ibrahim Al-Masri, Ismail Haniyeh, for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed on the territory of Israel and in the State of Palestine since at least October 7, 2023.”
@CoyoteHarperLibertarian2wks2W
Warrant doesn't matter for Benjamin Netanyahu as Israel and the United States are not members of the ICC. However, the ICC claims to have jurisdiction over Gaza, East Jerusalem and the West Bank after Palestinian leaders formally agreed to be bound by the court’s founding principles in 2015.
Why won't Democrats allow the United States to put the United Nations and the ICC where they belong? In a dumpster alongside the League of Nations? Been saying this for 23 years.
@ISIDEWITH2wks2W
Should the severity of a crime determine if an international court can charge leaders, no matter where they are from?
@9MMBZPJ2wks2W
Yes, the severity of the crime can tell us who and where their actions affected.
